Link anchor text is very crucial in the ranking of a website, just as important as the actual links. But then, not everybody knows what anchor text is, what this do, and how these affect site rankings.
Anchor texts are the visible, clickable words that are displayed by hyperlink which is used to connect one webpage to a document or page on another site on the web. Anchor link is usually blue and underlined, although the link colour and style of the website can be changed through HTML or CSS. An example of anchor text is the subsequent string letters which are written in blue – anchor text.
Another major question that is frequently posed by website owners is, "what kind of anchor texts do I use?". To answer this, we first have to go through the types of anchor texts that exist.
A good number of anchor text variations exist, depending on the intent of the website owner and the purpose of the anchor link. These different kinds are:
Exact Match Anchor Text: These include the exact keywords or phrase as the page that it is linked to. If a page is about SEO tools, the anchor text holds the exact words, for example, open SEO Tools. for more information.
Partial Match Anchor Text: These hold all the keywords in the query, but not in the exact form. Here, there is a variation in the keywords to the linked page. For example, the partial match anchor text for a page about SEO tools could be rephrased as tools used for SEO.
Branded Anchor Text: For these, the name of a brand is used to display the link to a webpage. For example, the brand 'SmallSEOTools', could be used as an anchor text, linking to a page on the website. For example, "see similar information at SmallSEOTools".
Naked Link Anchor Text: Here, the anchor text is the raw or naked URL as it would appear in a browser. An example is www.smallseotools.com
Random Or Generic Anchor Text: For this type of anchor texts, unspecific or generic words with no inclusion of the target keywords. Some examples of such phrases include: 'see here,' 'click here,' 'this site,' 'this article,' etc.
Image Anchor Text: This is used whenever an image is linked. Google will use the text contained in the image's alt attribute as the anchor text.
Anchor link texts help to provide useful contextual information about a webpage or website to users and search engines. Most, if not all search engines make use of external anchor texts – which we already know as the text other pages use as a link to a different website – as a reflection of how the page is viewed by other people and ultimately, the possibilities of what the page may refer to, or be about. Although website owners characteristically cannot determine the Anchor Link Text used by other pages to link to theirs, website owners can conclude that the internal Hyperlink texts that they use (i.e., within their own sites) is useful, descriptive, and relevant, as advised by Google.
If a good number of websites think that a particular page is relevant for a set of data, then, the linked page can rank well even if the data isn’t present in the text itself.
To create SEO-friendly anchor tag, the page anchor needs to have the following properties:
Short and Concise Anchor Texts: Although there is no limit to the length of characters for an anchor text, it would be much better to have the anchor link text as concise as it can be. The factors that need to be considered to insert anchors are the most succinct description of the page that is being linked to and the words or phrases that would increase the likelihood of users to click on a link.
Relevance to Linked-To Pages: More metrics have been identified for the determination of rankings by search engines. Among them, is the relevance between pages linked by anchor tag. The more relevant a link is between two pages, the higher the chances that they will both be ranked for queries related the information available of them. This naturally occurs when websites link out to other similar content on the internet, and it is determined by the similarity of the topic of the host page to the content of anchor link on that host page. With this in place, the anchor tag that points to content related to the topic of the host page are likely to send stronger relevance signals than Hyperlink that point to unrelated content.
Attention is paid to the different anchors used to link to the host page and used as additional information about the page and relevance of the queries. It is better to keep the text as descriptive as possible in order to convey relevancy signals to the search engines.
Low Density of Keywords in HyperLink: If too many websites that are linked to a particular webpage are using the same text that could begin to appear suspicious and poses a signal that the links were acquired unnaturally. It is better for a website to use different natural phrases instead of using the same keyword repeatedly.It is also important to not have too many internal links on a website or page. Internal linking is a good practice for webpages, but care has to be taken with the anchor tags that are used.
Avoidance of Anchor Link: At all costs, random or generic anchor texts should be avoided in linking webpages and websites (most especially the internal ones) as they are not in any way SEO friendly.
